Mental real estate is a concept that i have been heavily thinking about recently.
What is mental realeste?
Mental Realestate is the amount of space a thought takes up in your mind.
Pretty much: What are the main thoughts in your mind right now?
EVERYTHING around you takes up mental space in your mind, whether its subconsciously or consciously.
Our mental real estate is our capacity to allocate attention to things like: work, family, relationships. And there is a limited amount that you posses.
You must ask yourself: what thoughts are you giving attention to?
If the answer is things that don’t benefit you long ter, that’s okay. The best way I have found to overcome this is - deal with it head on and move on.
If you have the TV on in the background, you are thinking about it, If you’re anxious about something in the future - you are thinking about it.
To create - Your mind must be clear.
I’ve found when I have work to do, I literally can’t focus when I have thoughts that are taking up too much mental real estate in my mind.
An argument, a frustration with a client, an unfinished project from yesterday, not having worked out yet. These are all common thoughts that take up too much space in my head.
But all of it is solved by taking some actions and having a few unwanted conversations.
And you’ve just made space for the next big idea that could change your life.
Long story short: Analyse what you are thinking RIGHT NOW. And are you avoiding anything that’s stopping you from moving to the next level?
